Removing a tooth is done only after every alternative option has been explored and a thorough examination conducted including detailed radiographs.
Dental extractions might be necessary for severe tooth decay, impacted wisdom teeth, overcrowding, gum disease, or preparation for orthodontic treatment.
If you need to have a tooth extracted, it is important that it be replaced with a prosthetic tooth as soon as possible to prevent your adjacent teeth and opposing teeth from moving out of alignment. At Boroondara Dental, we will discuss what treatment option is best for your overall oral health.
Ensure you eat a full meal before your extraction as you will not feel like eating much afterwards.
Following removal of your tooth or teeth, we will give you post-operative care instructions. You may experience swelling and soreness, which may last a few hours or a few days depending on your procedure. This is to be expected, as an extraction should be viewed as a minor surgical procedure. If you have any questions, our highly trained dentists at Boroondara Dental will be able to answer any questions you may have before, during and after the operation.
To recover from a dental extraction, we recommend resting and avoiding strenuous activities. You may use ice packs to reduce swelling as well as take prescribed pain medication. It’s best to eat soft foods and avoid hot or hard foods. You can also gently rinse mouth with warm salt water to cleanse your mouth. We’ll provide post-operation instructions and advise to follow these diligently.
