Toothaches can be caused by various factors, including:

Tooth decay

Decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the tooth’s enamel, leading to cavities. If left untreated, decay can progress to affect deeper layers of the tooth, leading to sensitivity and pain.

Gum disease

Also known as periodontal disease, this condition affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. In advanced stages, gum disease can cause gum recession, bone loss, and tooth pain.

Tooth abscess

An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can develop at the root of the tooth or between the tooth and the gum, leading to severe pain, swelling, and sometimes fever.

Dental trauma

Trauma to the tooth, such as a crack, fracture, or injury, can cause pain and sensitivity. Even minor trauma can lead to inflammation of the dental pulp (pulpitis), resulting in discomfort.

Impacted wisdom teeth

When wisdom teeth don’t have enough space to emerge properly, they can become impacted, leading to pain, swelling, and sometimes infection.

Bruxism

Grinding or clenching the teeth, especially during sleep, can cause tooth pain, jaw soreness, and headaches.

Sinus infection

In some cases, pain perceived as a toothache may actually be due to a sinus infection, as the sinuses are located close to the upper molars.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

Problems with the jaw joint can cause pain in the teeth, jaw, and surrounding muscles.

Erupting teeth

In children, the discomfort associated with new teeth erupting through the gums can cause mild to moderate toothaches.
